What we collect, and where it goes.

Who we are
SaveMoneyExperts is a trading name of Warren Birchall, the data controller for the information described here. For anything about your data, email hello@savemoneyexperts.co.uk.
What we collect, and when
When you check your savings (before you give us any contact details):
- Your postcode and the address you pick from the list, or type in.
- Your answers: how much electricity you use (or your monthly bill, or that you don’t know), when you use it, which kind of tariff you are on and, on the battery check, whether you have an electric vehicle. Your electricity rates if you enter them. On our quote page: whether you own your home, whether the aerial picture we show is your home, whether you already have solar panels, roughly what your monthly bill is (or, if you give it, your exact monthly bill or yearly kWh), which kind of tariff you are on (asked only where a battery could pay for itself for your home) and when you’re looking to install. We also keep which system we recommend for your home (solar panels, solar panels with a battery, or a battery if you already have panels) with your request, so the installer knows.
- What we work out from that: your estimate and the figures behind it.
- Which steps you complete, where the check stopped you (the reason, never what you typed), and how you arrived: from one of our adverts (with the campaign, keyword, match type and device type the advert’s link carries), a search engine, another site or directly. Also whether you’re on a phone, tablet or computer, which we work out from your browser’s details without keeping them. All of this is kept with your estimate, so we can see where the check is hard to use and which advertising works.
- Whether you accepted or rejected cookies, with nothing that identifies you.
- When the cookie notice is shown to you and whether you closed it without choosing, with the type of device you use (phone, tablet or desktop). Nothing in this identifies you.
- If you arrived from an advert or a link, the campaign tags in that link (such as
utm_source, the search keyword, match type and device type a Google advert adds, or a Google or Meta click identifier), the page you landed on and the site you came from.
Only if you ask for a price (on the calculator, after you have seen your estimate; on our quote page, before it):
- Your name, email address and mobile number. We call you on it to check a couple of details and talk through your options.
- Whether you own your home, when you’re looking to install (if you tell us), which installers you agree may price the job (and when), and anything you choose to tell us in the optional box for the installer.
- The wording you agreed to when you submitted the form, and your browser’s identification string, kept as the record of that agreement.
- Your cookie choice when you sent the request: accepted, rejected or not answered. We keep it with your request so we can show what you agreed to and whether our ad measurement could run.
- If you arrived from one of our Google adverts, we send Google the advert’s click reference, the time of your request, a random reference for your request and your cookie choice (accepted, rejected or not answered), so we can see which adverts work. We never send Google your name or contact details.
- On our quote page there is an optional box, unticked unless you tick it: “Let Google know my enquiry came from an ad, so SaveMoneyExperts can measure its advertising.” If you tick it, we keep that answer, when you gave it and the wording you saw with your request, and we tell Google, from our servers, that your request came from your click on our advert, as above, even if you didn’t accept advertising cookies. It doesn’t set any cookies or load any Google code in your browser, and it isn’t used to personalise adverts. Leaving it unticked changes nothing about your request. You can withdraw it at any time by emailing us, and we won’t send Google anything more about your request.
Only if you ask us to email your estimate:
- The email address you type, the estimate we send to it (which names your postcode, not your address) and whether it was sent.
- Whether you ticked the box asking us to email you when real installer prices are available or VAT rules change, the exact words beside the box, and when you ticked it.
- A scrambled form of your IP address, kept for 30 days, so nobody can use the form to send emails to other people.
Only if you accept advertising cookies: what Google records about your visit, described under Cookies and your browser.
Only if you send us a quote to check (“Send it to us”, or a claim under our Best Price Guarantee): your email, and the quote with whatever it holds (usually your name, address, the system and its price). We send it to the installer pricing your job so they can beat it, and keep it for 12 months.
We do not collect anything else, and we do not ask for anything we can look up.
Where the property information comes from
To measure your roof rather than ask you about it, we look your address up in four places. The address, your home’s property reference number (its UPRN, from the certificate register), or the coordinates we get back for them, is all that is sent; your name and contact details never are.
- The Energy Performance Certificate register (Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government), for your home’s type, size, property reference number and any existing solar panels.
- Ordnance Survey’s OS Data Hub (Open UPRN), for where your home is on the map from its property reference number, and where the homes that share its roof are.
- Google’s Solar, Maps, Geocoding and Places APIs, to measure the roof from aerial imagery, show you the aerial picture of it, and find homes the certificate register does not list.
- PVGIS, the European Commission’s solar database, for a reference yield at those coordinates, used to check the roof measurement.
Why we are allowed to use it
- Working out your estimate, and improving the check: our legitimate interest in giving you the result you asked for (on the calculator without your contact details; on our quote page we show it after you send them).
- Getting you a price once you ask for one: the steps you have asked us to take before any contract, and your consent when you submit the form.
- Checking a quote you send us and asking for a better price: the steps you have asked us to take.
- Emailing your estimate when you ask us to: the steps you have asked us to take. Emailing you when real installer prices are available or VAT rules change: your consent, given by ticking the box, which you can withdraw at any time by replying “stop” or emailing hello@savemoneyexperts.co.uk.
- Measuring which adverts work, with cookies: your consent, given in the cookie banner. You can withdraw it at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page.
- Keeping your cookie choice with your request for a price: our legitimate interest in being able to show what you agreed to, and whether our ad measurement could run.
The only emails you get from us are ones you ask for: your estimate, your price and, only if you tick the box, a note when real installer prices are available or VAT rules change. That note is the only marketing we send. You can stop it at any time by replying “stop” or emailing hello@savemoneyexperts.co.uk, and we never pass your email to anyone else for marketing. When you ask for a price, we also call you on the mobile number you give, about that request.
Who sees it
- The installers pricing your job, and no others. When you ask for a price you agree which installers may have your details: where two or more of ours cover your area you tick the ones you want; where only one does, it is our MCS-certified installer covering your area; and where none of ours covers it yet, it is an MCS-certified installer we find for your area, who may not be one listed on our installers page. Our installers now: Energy On 24. We send those installers your name, email address, phone number, full address and postcode with a link to your home on Google Maps, whether you own your home and whether you confirmed our aerial picture of it, what we measured of your roof (which way it faces, its pitch, the parts panels can go on, how many panels fit and how shaded it is), your electricity bill or use as you gave it (or that you weren’t sure), what you asked for, what your estimate showed you (the system, the estimated saving and the typical price range, or that you already have panels) and anything you wrote in the box for the installer, so they can price the job. Our installers are listed, with their certification numbers and the areas they cover, on our installers page. We never sell or pass your details to anyone else.
- The people who host our systems: Supabase (our database) and Vercel (the website), under their data-processing terms. They process the data for us and cannot use it for themselves.
- Resend, which sends our emails: your estimate, if you ask us to email it, and your request to the installers pricing your job. It receives the email addresses and the emails, under its data-processing terms, and cannot use them for itself. Resend is a US company and keeps its records of the email in the US, under the UK’s data bridge with the US (Resend is certified under the Data Privacy Framework’s UK Extension) and the UK Addendum to the standard contractual clauses in its data-processing terms. The emails themselves go out from its EU region (Ireland).
- Fontshare (Indian Type Foundry), which supplies the site’s typefaces: your browser fetches them from its servers on every page, so it sees your IP address and browser details. It stores nothing on your device and receives nothing else.
- Google, only if you accept advertising cookies: what their tags record about your visit, never your name, email address or phone number. See Cookies and your browser.
- Nobody else, unless the law requires it.
How long we keep it
- A savings check with no request for a price: 12 months, so you can come back to it, then deleted.
- If you asked us to email your estimate: your email address and your choice about further emails stay with the estimate and are deleted with it (after 12 months, or, if you also asked for a price, with that request); the scrambled IP address after 30 days. If you reply “stop”, we keep a note of the address so we never email it again.
- A request for a price: for 24 months after it was last active (you contacted us, or we worked on it), so we can deal with the installation and any question about it, then deleted.
- The record of what you agreed to when you submitted the form, and your cookie choice at that moment: as long as the request itself.
- Your cookie choice: six months in your browser, then we ask again.
- Advertising cookies, if you accept them: up to 90 days in your browser. How long Google keeps what the tags send is set by Google's own policy.
Ask us to delete your details sooner and we will, unless we need them to deal with something you have already asked for.
Cookies and your browser
We ask before we use any cookie the site does not need to work. Until you choose, and if you say no, no advertising or analytics code loads at all, and your browser sends nothing to Google from any advertising or analytics tag.
Google Ads, if you accept advertising cookies. Google’s tag puts cookies on your device (on this site, names beginning _gcl_, kept for up to 90 days; Google may also use its own cookies on its own domains) so it can tell us when a visit from one of our Google adverts ends in a request for a price. For that, Google receives the address of the page, the advert click identifier if you arrived from one of our adverts, your browser and device details and your IP address, and, when you ask for a price, the fact that a request was made. It never receives your name, email address or phone number from us: we do not use Google’s “enhanced conversions”, which would send them. We use this only to measure which adverts work; we do not use it to show you adverts (remarketing and personalised advertising are switched off). Google uses what it receives under its own privacy policy and may process it outside the UK: how Google uses information from sites that use its services.
We keep your choice in a cookie called sme_consent for six months, so we do not ask on every page; after that we ask again. It holds only the choice, so it needs no consent itself. If you ask us for a price, we also keep the choice you had made (accepted, rejected or not answered) with your request. You can change your mind at any time with Cookie settings at the foot of every page. If you withdraw, the tags stop and we delete the cookies they set on this site; what they had already sent stays with Google under its policy.
We also use your browser’s session storage for two things: to remember the campaign tags you arrived with, the page you landed on and the site you came from, so we know which advertising works, and to remember a notice you have dismissed. Both stay on your device and are cleared when you close the tab.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, delete it or stop using it, and ask us to send it to you or to someone else in a usable form. Email hello@savemoneyexperts.co.uk and we will reply within a month. If you are unhappy with how we have handled your data, you can complain to us at the same address: we will acknowledge your complaint within 30 days and tell you what we are doing about it. You can also complain to the UK’s data protection regulator, the Information Commission (until 30 September 2026 the Information Commissioner’s Office, and still known as the ICO), at ico.org.uk.
Changes
When we change this notice the date at the top changes with it. If a change affects how we use details you have already given us, we will tell you.
